I'm starting to train as a yoga teacher next year. One thing that I'm interested in is how yoga can benefit us as horse-riders. It's why I started to practise yoga in the first place! I'm interested in not only the poses and exercises, but also how the breathing and relaxation exercises can help as well.
At the moment there aren't many people offering yoga-for-riders type classes in the UK and part of me wonders why. Is it because there aren't many people offering it? Or is it because the demand isn't there?
So, getting to the point (eventually...): would you be interested? If so, what sort of format (a one-off 3 hour seminar, or a once-a-week for 6 weeks type course, just as two example). If you wouldn't be interested, why not?
I'm going to cross-post this on a number of forums to get as many responses as possible so apologies if you see this elsewhere.
Thanks in advance.

Gemma, I think this sounds a great idea. I had a lesson with an instructor who is a BHS Chief Examiner. She was talking to us about doing Yoga, Pilates or something called the Alexander Technique as they all teach you flexibility and balance and how to recognise what your body is doing. I know if any of these was offered in direct relation to riders, in my area I would be interested. Best of luck with your training. |

Love Yoga..... there is a tv channel dedicated to it. I really would like someone to come to me - once a week. But its sooooo expensive. Which i understand but can't really afford it. would love to do it in the comfort of my own home with someone helping me.
Good luck. |

I'd be interested in it, I think I definitely need to get more supple to help me with my riding as I am getting older!! |

Me, me, me, I would be interested!
My hips are terrible which isn't great when riding a very wide arab. I have just started yoga, but something aimed specifically at riders would be great. |

Yes I'd be interested too (I'm really inflexible and have lower back problems) Do you think yoga could be made rider-specific then Gemma? Would ANY yoga be good ? Time is always an issue for riders - if you have time for yoga you could be riding, but once a week would be good, actually might start looking for local class... |

I would be interested. Anything that makes you more aware of what your body is doing and makes you more flexible must help your riding.
Would prefer an hour a week to one longer season. Then you can build on your knowledge week on week rather than be flooded with info all at once and then forget it (I have a terrible memory!)
Hope this helps
Good luck |

Thanks very much for the input. You've given me things to think about which is good.
Julia - you've hit the nail on the head - do I think yoga can be made rider-specific? I don't know. Yet! That's what I'm starting to look at. I've been doing it for 2 years now - but a general class. It's helped with my riding, balance and general suppleness (and my body has changed shape significantly!). My teacher has given me a set of exercises that I can do during an endurance ride as I tend to get a stiff lower back. So if you're at a ride and want to meet me, look for the plonker doing yoga poses during the vet hold!!! |
