Its been ages since I've read a really good book. I think the last was Memoirs of a Geisha by Arther Golden. Before that The Green Mile by Stephen King. I've also read Clive Cussler and Dean Koontz.

I'm going in hospital soon so I need something easy to read yet holds my attention.

I'm not into autobiographies, romance, politics or Harry Potter / Lord of the Rings types.

Any suggestions?

I love anything by Stephen King, Dean Koontz, James Herbert etc

Anything spooky/scary and I can't put it down.

Stephen Kings Tommyknockers is one of my favorites.

Not that I get any time to read at all these days!!

If you haven't read the, try the Earth's Children series by Jean M Auel, start with The Clan of the Cave Bear, then The Valley of the Horses, and if you, like most that read them want more, there 's 3 more to follow on! but you must read them in the right order

Dear Vera

Have you ever read any of Minette Walters' books? They are all well written with devious plots but look especially for "The Shape of Snakes" - it is just so clever.

Hope you are not in Hospital for too long - you'll be sorely missed here!

Anything by James Mitchener. Centennial is a wonderful read.

Hope all goes well in hospital Vera. Nothing serious I hope. Take care.

Books that I have thoriughly enjoyed of late are;

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and
A Spot of Bother - both by Mark Haddon.

Mary Wesley books, particularly Part of the Furniture and A Duboius Legacy.

Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishigura. Don't be fooled it is not a love story.

Tony Parsons - Man and Boy and also Man and Wife.

A.S. Byatt is a new one I have found, keep a dictionary to hand...lots of good words!!

Maeve Binchy spins a good yarn

Alan Bennet - The Uncommon Reader was great and quite short.

Hope you find something good and that all goes well.

I'd second Tess Gerritsen if you like crime/psychology/medical/ thrillery type books. The early Patricia Cornwell ones were good as well, start with Post Mortem. Also like Minette Walters, loved The Scolds Bridle.

Don't get enough time to read and it has to hook me within the first few pages or I lose interest/don't care.

Hope you spend as little time as possible in hospital Vera and that it's not too painful for you.

Fabulous response - thank you, so many to choose from!

I shall investigate each one.

I have to be hooked in the first chapter too, but once its got me I can't put it down. Mind you as I'll be hooked up to a morphine pump thing I don't know if I'll be too away with the fairies to read.

Put it this way I have made sure my life insurance policy is to hand and also made provision for the horses. My dear friend Gill will have Dennis and Morris, while John will keep the girls in the event of my demise!

I like Harlan Coben and Tess Gerritson books, both American crime writers. I have some I can send you if you like?
I have also just read the Gangs by Ross Kemp, it provides in interesting insight into Gangs all over the world. I think it accompanies a TV series on Sky.
