They dont do catalogues, the auctioneer is Tyrone Roberts...If you have never been before its certainly and eye opener, very rarely do you find a decent horse there(No offence meant Sunny) I went in the Spring and it just makes me sad...You see scared little foals who just get carted from sale to sale, 4 week puppies on strings being sold by gypsy children. Its more like a fashion show now between the traveller girls, with their skimpy outfits and high heels...What makes me so cross, is you see really expensive cars and lorries etc and these guys flashing the cash, yet the majority of the horses for sale look dreadfull, and they are thrashed about the grounds all day long! Fortunatley you get the good guys like us who try and help these poor helpless animals, over the years I have rescued 14 horses/ponies, 1 puppy and 4 rabbits from this hateful place. If you decide to go Cazza, the deadstock normally starts around 11am and horses supposedly lunchtime but it was really late last time and only 11 or so went through the ring. Good luck if you go. This sort of sale is a disgrace, and you should pester your MP to do something about it, take pictures of the state of the poor animals and GET it stopped it seems never a truer word was uttered that ANYTHING with a pulse can own a horse and that is tragic for horses, people should be licenced and made to prove they can give a home to these poor animals whose best hope for a life is rescue

I just do not understand how this sort of thing can go on! I mean, where are the welfare people in all this? What are the RSPCA doing?

I already know the answer to that - visting Jimmy's farm because they were reported for keeping rabbits and guinea pigs together in a large fenced area.....sorry I digress But it just shows where the priorities lie

This particular sale has always been a disgrace many of us who have been there have complained about it over and over again, yet nothing seems to be done. I can't face going there anymore, but the last time I went I managed to come home with 2 Section A mares, both really nice, I eventually managed to get papers for them and they have both gone to lovely family homes, with very experienced owners, and are loved to bits.

Do you want a few people who could help, maybe no one has complained about it and the RSPCA inspector dos'nt go in. We had a lot of problems with a sale in Warks some time ago and we all got together and spoke to HAPPA, RSPCA, Local Police, the BHS Rep. ILPH and they visited and it made a lot of differnce. The local vet would also attend & the Donkey Rep. from Symouth.

Sue, RSPCA etc., are always there on the day, but it's not made a jot of difference, there's always too much going on there to be able to see everything, and some of those b*******s are way to clever

I know exactley what you mean we had the same sort of problems, I even heard of them killing meat horses on the boxes at one London sale, but, the only thing you can do is to get all the official bodies there, there is some very good welfare people still about and they need to be there in numbers to support things. Had very good back upin the past from the ILPH & HAPPA & the Police. Who is in charge at the Norfolk (Redwing) and there are loads of ex.mounted police officers working in welfare. I know a couple of sales where a film crew turned up and the Sunday paper.

The RSPCA are a DISGRACE!!! I have been so many times, once I have been cautioned by the police for causing a fracas because I had the audacity to complain and cause a scene about the state of things. I had witnessed some gypsy kids pulling this pony about who was tied to a lorry, she reared and fell over backwards, falling onto the next lorry ramp, needless to say the kids scarpered so I shot in to help the terrified pony. SHe had a huge laceration on her neck so I started yelling at nearby people to get the vet on call, when the owner came up behind me and started F-ing and blinding at me as to what I was doing with her F-ing pony!!! I was furious I shouted at her to get her Ar*e into gear and get the vet! This was about 1pm and the sale finishes much later....Guess what the vet had gone home!!!!!! The RSPCA officer said to load it on the lorry so the public couldnt see it..God I was like a woman possessed, I told him that the pony needed stiching and probably sedating as was in such shock, but instead of listening to me they got the police in, who I am still stunned to this day, took ME away!!!! Warned me that if I went anywhere near that side of the sale I would be arrested for sure!!! I went back to my friends covered in this poor pony's blood, my friends knowing what Im like thought Id been in a fight, but I made them go round there and the pony had collapsed, I later learned that it died.....This sale is a disgrace, I have written to so many people, I have stood up and interupted the horse auction to tell the auctioneer so and he came up with the fact that fromthe next sale nothing bar horses, ponies and Donkeys were to be sold..That didnt last long. The sad fact is, is the RSPCA are petrified of most of the travellers, and are scared to intervene, and yes they are evil but surely with their power something could be done??? Another time a lad kept fast trotting his pony up and down the sale site and kept cracking it with a lump of wood, so I beckoned him over, he thinking that I wanted to buy the pony went to get off and handed me his wood, silly move as I promptly cracked him with it!!! The language that boy let out I can tell you, but after that I had a group of travellers stalking me, I felt sure they would have had me hadnt I stayed in a very public view!! Hence the reason I didnt go for a while as I needed time to change my appearance!! I hate the sale and everything it stands for...Leighx

I go to Beeston occasionally and even there the RSPCA sit on their bums when there are the odd case that no SELF RESPECTING person would show in public..........they would not have got like that with a decent owner!

These days I mostly stay away from the horse section, and just go for the tack and outdoor market. I start counting the pennies everytime I see an Arab go through, colts, stallions and the odd mare. They never make half the prices of the gypsy coloured cobs.

Some really lovely ponies do end up in sales, owners who have advertised for months with no luck selling, they are the ones who don't leave the ponies side and answer all your questions, and would rather sell out of the ring to someone they met and had good vibes about.

These other sales should be banned by law, surely the new animal act has provisions that would help?

Well I can tell you we have had good results from the RSPCA in Beeston market on several occations, also the Auctioneer & the Local Vet.

I think you need to get your selves in to some ordally body and get the officials there, the Donkey Sanctury would be interested if Donkeys were been treated badley & the local police usually have a field day on unregistered vehicles & no tax etc etc. Maybe you should arrange to meet the inspector there fromthe RSPCA & also the local agent for the ILPH,HAPPA, not for getting the Red Wing man used to be Welfare Officer for the BHS several years ago and this is on there doorstep.... Keep at it don't give up, write to your MP, the Council. get a film crew there, were all behind you, this is not Maylasia...

Leigh, I totally agree with that you say about the authorities at Watton, they are ALL petrified by the travellers, the ones at Watton seem to be a very nasty lot indeed. If asked, the police would say they had removed you from the scene for you own protection, the truth of it being that they would need literally hundreds of police to sort out what goes on there. This particular sale should be stopped completely, years ago I used to go to the Cambridge horse sales, and rescued a few from there, but nothing there prepared me for Watton, it is a total disgrace.

I used to go to Beeston for the market but avoided the sale as a riding school near where I lived used to be forever buying ponies from there and selling them back there when they proved unsuitable. it was heartbreaking to think of them forever going back and forth to probably end up as meat. I was very young, pennyless and naiive the only time I went to Llanybydder sale or I'd have a field of Welsh mountain ponies. I go to Murton sales in York occaisionally and it doesn't seem too bad there on the whole.

I hope something can be done about the Watton sale, it sounds terrible. Are there many sales like this still going on? Are all the horses passported?

Thanks Cazza, got that but now cant get back on my mail account!! As I have said to cazza, I had heard that they were going to stop Watton or move it. I know so many people have such faith in the RSPCA and ILPH but believe me I have seen the chief inspector of both orgs at Watton yet things are still the way they are!! And they are supposed tp bethe ones with power, its a joke as its usually left to people like us trying to get as much of our hard earned pennies together just so we can rescue one poor animal. Not only have I rescued many horses from there but Rabbits, chickens, even a lurcher puppy! Lx

Write to the local press - let people who wouldn't normally go there know what it is like and ask them to help stop it by all writing to the autioneers/RSPCA/Authorities/MP etc. Invite a reporter to go with you next time it is on. Alternatively take a film crew the RSPCA are bound to do something then!!

Has the sale date gone yet..

I still think you should'nt give up, I think the local council has to give them a licence to hold the sale, that might be another angle, We took a film crew into Abbergaveny & Beeston, with the Auctioneers permission, and it did help, we also took one into a slaughter house, but, all of these places are often not the nicest place to be and can be very sad and saddening to see horse/donkeys and other animals sold for money in numbers.

90% of all animals presented at live auctions go to the meat, if you buy the farmers papers it records the prices of all stock sold, which won't include horses in this country as they are not agricultural. One of the biggest problems is if these horses leave this country to go to other EU slaughter houses.

I'm still think you should get the ILPH involved, you may not stop it but there are regulations in place to help..What does the BHS welfare dept. say....tell us maybe everyone failing to do their job needs identifing..shaming. Its Not Malaysia...

Maybe we need to write to the MP and set up an on line link to complain, we could all help them...

I have heard on the grapevine that there were in fact very few horses for sale and they were mostly ex race horses?! Apparently a huge fight broke out a numerous local police forces attended. Maybe this will add fuel to the fire of stopping the sale all together.
