Can anyone tell us when Galeon arrived at Claverdon Stud and when he departed, and who owned him and where his home base was. Also searching good pictures and history about this horse.. please...Thanks Sue...

Dear Sue
I had a Gaelon child - Elleon out of El-Era - for 4 years. He was owned and bred by Kina Murray and was a little bay powerhouse. He'd done well showing and then I had him for endurance. His best result was 5th place in the Berks Downs Southern Championship 2 day 160km. Chris Hicks had Clipper who won the 160km Alfred's Tower ER in 2003 or 2004. Beccy Broughton had a mare Zarpela out of Zarossa (sorry if spelling wrong) who did well - she was third (I think) at the Fontwell 2 day 160km FEI ride in 2004 (?). Didn't the Owen's have a mare by him - Snowbird ? Alex Tennant is on the YR trip to Germany this year with Cicerone, a very tall grey gelding. I know that Galeon was at Claverdon but don't know when he arrived I'm afraid. He was a lovely grey horse, very athletic, I think his children have a reputation for being a bit "hot".
Hope that helps a little

Hi Jan, Thanks for the help, this is the best pic I've found so far..I think he spent his last year here in 1992,thanks for reminding me about Snow Bird, I also love Cicerone and am so pleased he's off to Germany, hope they do well. I think if Jane Kadri spotted this posting she'd come back and tell us he was on the Beefeater Deal and where he went home to..
PS, I understand your off to Malvern....see you there..Sue
This is the best picture I've found to date, |

Sue
I knew Galeon very well while he was at Claverdon Stud for the three seasons he was in this Country. He had a kind temperament and was a lovely stamp of a horse.
Joan Ratcliff imported him in 1991 and he was loaned to Claverdon Stud for three Seasons by the Kurozweki State Stud in Poland who bred and owned him.
He had 13 foals in 1992; 15 in 1993 and 8 in 1993. He was originally loaned for 2 seasons, but his progeny were outstanding and the State Stud agreed that he should stay for a further season.
He was performance tested in Poland and out of the three races he ran he had two firsts and a second. He was also successful in hand and in ridden classes in this Country.
Upon his return to Poland he covered very few mares, mostly non Arabs and was then sold to a young dressage rider and was gelded.
I bred two foals by Galeon out of my Zarozza (Argos)/Kais I mare and was delighted with the results. The 14 year old, a grey, is just now coming into her own and is very sweet and kind and looks after her rider. She is very sensitive but that probably comes from her dam line. She is very sensible to ride. We have been very careful not to over face her and do too much too soon. I took her on a course with Dr Deb Bennett, an expert on conformation, some years ago and she raved about her conformation and said she was one of the best conformed Arabians she had seen in recent years. She too is all horse. Her full sister, a year younger and a bay, is owned by Constance Newbould and has done some endurance in Scotland and she has bred a cracking foal by Dhruv. She also had a fourth place at Towerlands as a 2 year old.
All the progeny who raced were successful and they are extremely fast!
Many have also been successful in endurance.
I am not sure I would agree that his progeny are 'hot heads'. Certainly not necessarily just from breed lines. This reputation probably comes from those who have raced and have not lost the competitive edge. Such is their make-up that they would take some settling down after racing. They are certainly late developers (as Galeon was) and many of them are extremely sensitive, with minds of their own. Some did too much too soon and couldn't handle pressure. Much of the 'character' the progeny display comes from their dam lines. Almost all of his progeny have had some performance success and a very high percentage have had above average success in racing, endurance and dressage. There are very few who have not been in the public eye which is an amazing achievement for a sire.
I have a few photographs of Galeon but have no idea how to get them on here!!
I am looking forward to Galeon's grandchildren, the ones I have seen have his temperament and are making big rideable horses.
Hope that helps.

Sorry - just to correct typographical error. Galeon had 8 foals in 1994.

had a lovely galeon mare zakzak untill last month when we had to sell her. we bought her as a 7 year old and raced her for 3 seasons and was quick, but as described a bit of a hothead - for first 2 seasons would get first couple of runs okay but boiled over and by 3rd season was boiling over at the mention of racing - a real pity - on the gallops she was a match for the best french horses we had. she loved to jump (SJ and XC) but hated dressage with a vengance - no way we could have got the heart rate down for endurance either. we had 1 colt out of her who is 3 now and is super - a real power house, but definatly a late developer. |
