Gemma - my head hurts too!!! Please do let me know how you get on with trying the OF.

Judith, I've emailed you, did you get my email??

Debbie - will try and phone WE to see what they say.

The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards a western endurance saddle. Just have to find the right one now...

The Ray Cooper saddle is back on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Handcrafted-Ray-Cooper-Endurance-Saddle-complete_W0QQitemZ170064589667QQihZ007QQcategoryZ72593QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Its down Portsmouth way - now that's where I think Ray Cooper is.

I would love to buy it - but am trying to be sensible!!!

Mazey and all,
Short backed arabs and western saddles are a problem! With my Spanish Arabians I found the barrel racing saddle to be the best fit. The skirts are short and rounded behind the cantle which is low, as is the horn and the pommel braces. Those are short and rounded which makes standing in the stirrups more comfortable and easier to get up over the withers. With a roughed suede seat, they are very comfortable, give good contact and are much lighter. I have not seen true barrel racing saddles on this side of the ocean but they are easy enough to order and have sent from the states. Has anyone seen what I am describing?

Lisa - I have tried a barrel racing saddle on my mare and it was a better fit than most of the other western types - but still too long on her back and still bridged. It maybe a case of just finding one particular make that will fit but unfortunately as you say we just don't have that much choice in the UK and I have already bought 2 saddles from the US which didn't fit. Its not just short back but dippy short back which makes it doubly dificult to fit. I have given up and bought a synthetic english saddle and am thinkiing of looking for another horse to fit my gorgeous Circle Y saddle - figured it might be easier than finding a saddle to fit the horse (and I relaly love western riding)

Mazey ~ I checked out the Circle Y's. Really Nice. Is yours the Mojave with the tunnel skirt? I have ridden in that one and it is a joy. I like your idea of finding a horse to fit the saddle <chuckle> !!

One thing to be forwarned about when looking at western saddles is to stay away from the less costly "Mexican tree" made saddles. They tend to get hairline cracks or in some cases split and can thus cause a dangerous accident. Their cinches are set too far forward for my taste anyhow. We seem to be getting a lot of those here in Spain recently.

Mazey

trekker do a noce treeless western saddle, that acually looks attractive, I have ridden my short backed gelding in it and been fine. it was very stable too, stayed in place even with a bit of the "silly billies" It looks the part too.

It is not the one in my sig, that is a normal Flexi tree, does not fit my gelding.

Hello to all!I think I might actually be one of very few (if any)Americans here on your forum. I actually ran across your pages while searching for info on the Zaldi, a project I have abandoned, as they don't make one wide enough for my big boy. A few things I would like to help with, if I may. My experience with Wintecs is good(have several friends who like them also), though I prefer the smell and feel of leather to equisuede. It kind of smells like a prophylactic...hope that is not too vulgar to say, but I just couldn't think of another way to put it. Abetta, on the other hand make lovely synthetic (cordura)saddles in all sorts of styles, and they even make endurance and western styles on an arabian tree. Generally you can get them for less than 3 or 400 dollars, which I believe translates to roughly less than 200 GPB, is it? Anything I can answer for you about western saddles I would be happy to help with if at all possible. One more thing....that statement about us using saddle fitters as an exception and not a rule only applies to a selection of dumb cowboys who have been riding badly all their lives and just don't know any better. Saddle fit is paramount to most of us and when we find a good fitter (like mine...who does equine masaage as well) we give their name to all our fellow riders because we know how important that is. I am STILL looking for a second hand saddle, I have been through three so far (he is STILL growing), and my fitter comes to the barn to check each time I get a new one. Last visit I got templates to make it easier. Anyway, I am happy to know you all. I look forward to reading your posts and sharing if I can! Catharine

Hi Catharine,

I just wanted to extend you a warm welcome to AL from across the pond! You are correct there are not many Americans on this site. Our favourite has to be Egbert though she is educating us on Arabian pedigrees

Right now I ride in a Barefoot Cheyenne which is treeless. Eventually I would love a western saddle which would be suitable for endurance. Although I am very happy with my saddle I am always keen for any more information and ideas. I'm not sure what size my horse would be, but she is a good doer and she does like her middle cuddly

I'll need to go and have a search on the Abetta you mention.

Welcome again, you should put a post on the discussion forum to introduce yourself

Hi Shah

I've come to this thread late where abouts do you live? There use to be a western stud near me and they also had a tack shop selling western saddles etc. Only thing not sure if they are still running as I'am not into western Their name was Carter they were big in western held shows etc. they bred quarter horses. I live in Norfolk and they are just down the road from me. When I went to watch a western display
they said if anyone was interested in buying a saddle from them they would fit it to your horse but unfortunately you would have to take your horse there, and because they were big in the western world they might be able to recommed someone else if they don't do it anymore. Let me know and I can always make enquiries for you, they use to have a web site but there again I can't remember it.

Christine
