It appears until very recently it has not been compulsory to register change of ownership with the AHS. So I assume many horses have just 'vanished'.

There is still a £5000 fine for not having an up to date passport so breed societies should be supporting this and not making money out of it. My boy is a gelding and with me for life so what encouragement other than wanting to do the right thing did I have to spend £170! Horse passports are a good idea for welfare but unless it's enforced only the responsible comply so it kinda defeats the purpose. Most horses that ended up in supermarket meals or suffer indiscriminate breeding and neglect won't have a passport.
AHS and other breed societies should be taking their role seriously and doing checks on ownership to pick up on non compliance, I wouldn't mind at all confirming horse still with me.

Great ideas!
Lets hope some of them come to fruition!

I agree with Ari, if there was no charge or a small charge more people, would be inclined to register a change of ownership. Obviously there would still be some folkes, who would not.

The AHS could also offer free membership for that year with the Transfer of Ownership, a great way to get new members on board. Hopefully, they would renew their membership the following year.

AHS should make it cheaper to do the right thing. I had passport for my boy but no registration certificate, it had been lost between breeder and first "unregistered" owner. It happens people lose things, but it cost me £170 as AHS wouldn't change ownership on passport ( a legal requirement on my part) until I paid for replacement reg certificate even though they knew better than me he was registered! AHS did help by contacting breeder but I had to get proof of transfer from previous owner; it really was an expensive and time consuming journey. No wonder genuine people don't bother let alone the folk who don't care.

I think it should be made cheap to do so.

When I brought my mare at age 4 I paid to change the registration, but the AHS didn't bother to change the registration to my name. This came to light when I wanted to list her as a brood mare, 6 years later the AHS phoned me up to check she was mine as they had no record!!

Well as far as the AHS is concerned, yes they have vanished - 4 owners between me and the previous registered owner as far as my mare is concerned (and she was only 4). Personally I can understand people not bothering, as it is an additional cost to add onto the purchase price of your new horse, and it is not particularly cheap to do so.
