Hi Folks!!
Our weanling is a bit off colour - what do you think?
He was weaned at 6 months old (5 weeks ago). 10 days after weaning, he was wormed along with everyone else. Since then he's been incredibly glum in himself but as he'd been recently weaned I kept an eye but wasn't overly concerned. He was engaging with the yearlings, eating and drinking, passing both faeces and urine. Then last Sunday I brought him in as his cheeks were swollen and his tummy was incredibly bloated. We kept a close watch on him but he wasn't showing any colic signs, or anything major. The following morning we got the vet as he hadn't passed any faeces, despite eating and drinking. As soon as the vet hung up we passed plenty. His face had gone down over night but his fetlock were huge. Whilst we waited for the vet to arrive we let him wonder around the yard and his legs went down a bit too. He was also not as bloated. The vet gave him a mild steroid injection and vitamin injection to help his gut and put it down to a wormer reaction. He was much brighter for the following few days but started being a bit 'glum' again yesterday. Again, he's eating, drinking and passing both. However, we brought him in this evening as his tummy is huge again and his fetlocks are super swollen (and have heat this time). His temp is 38.2. He's eating. We have spoke with the vet who advised to watch him through the night as he's not showing major signs, and see what's happening in the morning. The symptoms are so odd. The vet is aware of him and will be coming tomorrow if nothing drastic happens through the night! |

Diego has had his repeat bloods and they have come back worse than what we started with! This is really perculiar as he seems so much better in himself! He has no swellings anywhere and he's no longer bloated. He's naughty, and causing lots of trouble with the other yearlings. He's gone to being the one that gets picked on, to bring the bully! Everyday he is bright eyed and bushy tailed. All the yearlings are now getting fed a grass/pony nut combination and he snaffles his down before bossing everyone else about to finish theirs. Vet is calling back in the morning to discuss further investigation (scan/liver biopsy) but we really don't know how to digest this information!! I was quite blown away really, after we ended the call I thought of a load of questions I should have asked! |

Hey - the collovet seems to be working magic tricks!! He's getting his bloods done again tomorrow to see if it has made any difference, but I think it's doing the trick!! So now we just need to know what happens next... we should know more by the end of the week :) |

Hope all goes well. Brewers yeast certainly won't harm but some won't touch it, my boy loves it and has been on it for years. Many of the high end very expensive supplements contain Brewers yeast!. I get Gold Label. |

Thanks guys! I had thought about the yeast/yoghurt thing. I'll try him on that.
The vet came and ran bloods. All have come back clear apart from his liver enzymes. Our fields are clean and none of the others are obviously poorly. So he's on medication for the next 2 weeks when another blood test will be done. He's still out over night so we will see what the next 2 weeks bring |

You could try some natural yogurt in his feed or brewers yeast, both aid gut function and standing in overnight can tend to leave bloated legs where the lymph has not been moved around by walking. Dont overdo the short feed, alfalfa or grass nuts easier to digest than cereal. Good luck x |

Hopefully it is a something and nothing but I think that tomorrow it would be worth bearing an infection by Lawsonia in mind as a possible cause when discussing with your vet. There is a test but apparently it is not entirely reliable in that it doesn't always show a positive. I have attempted to attach a link to a Rossdales vets pdf on the topic.
