I have ahd my french bred purebred boy for three years this year. He is 21 now. Came to me in a bit neglected state but picked up quickly. He never liked going out alone and did throw himself to the ground complete with rider at one point so he hacks with company.
All has been going fairly well, a bit inclined to buck at start of canter but gradually he has become increasingly silly out hacking. One day fine.. next day a cantering on the spot lunatic who will bounce all the way home in a muck sweat.

He has been really itchy this year, rubbing most of his mane and tail off, also running up and down in his paddock. A few months ago he had a mare in the field next to him and he will dog her footsteps and has been very possesive of her. She ignores him! He hacks out with her and can be sensible or silly depends how he feels... any advice ,supplement suggestions as I would like my nice boy back and I am getting a bit fed up of riding him :(

Pleased to hear :D

Just a quick update.. didnt want to talk too soon! Java has been much more his sensible self for last couple of weeks. Hacking out roadwork on his own! Even managing a small bit of riding grassy tracks and he did very well Glad to have my boy back, think it must have been the female influence!

Even progressed to a short canter on stubble heading away from home

It sounds like your getting somewhere, keep it up, but keep safe.

Two of my Arabs have cushings, neither have displayed the thick coat. A simple blood test will tell you, sometimes this test is offered free, so worth checking with your vet. Also certain times of year are best to test for cushings I think?

Just to add I have moved him away from the mare but he still has a very strong bond towards her!

Thanks for getting back to me. Glo, he is not on any feed at all, just grass and hay.
I have started taking him out on his own,on short hacks around the roads only and he has been very good so far. Tomorrow he goes out hacking on tracks with another horse so remains to be seen how he will be!
Judith s and firelight I may need to look into the cushings possibility.. he shows no heavy coat signs but it may be worth looking into.Fingers crossed!

Interesting you have had the same with your chap Firelight. Jet my 25 yr old is behaving like a 3 yr old & he is very cute :D lol

Also thought Cushings. My 20 year old turned from a totally reliable chap into a nightmare. He was diagnosed with Cushings and was sadly retired due to being dangerous, agree, almost senile.

Have you had him tested for Cushings? Might be worth it, esp at his age. One of my Arabs Jet, now 25 started with Cushings when he was about 20 & his behaviour changed & he would be sane one min & a total screwball the next, almost as if he had lost his marbles! I had to retire him not that long after the diagnosis as he had become so unpredictable to ride! He is very happy with his retirement, think he has gone somewhat senile lol :D

If you can get some bute, put him on it 1 for 10 days, see if he is any better, that way you can rule out any pain. Cut feed right out but give a balancer, I would use blue chip, and use just grass to bulk it out. ( the ame is to take out all sugar from hard feed) I would work on his nappeness. I would start to lead him out on his own on your short hacks.

At 21 you may feel it's not worth it, but he will and can become a good hack on his own, I think this is the key!

Oh by the way only do walk. If he try's to trot or jog make him stand for a few moments then walk on, if he gets to manic turn his around and go back till settled then try again.
