Hello I'm new to AL so please bear with me as I'm struggling with posting so fingers crossed this will work#128077;. I'm considering getting a haybar for our pregnant mare, and I was wondering if any of you has used one and how your Arab got on with it? Thanks Nikki x |

Thanks again for all the helpful replies. If anyone should know of a pony sized hay bar that someone is selling please could u let me know. Horse is living out at the mo as she is due to foal down in July :) so it doesn't matter if a second hand one doesn't come about immediately. Im so glad I joined this forum as I don't normally join things like this xx  |

If you are unsure, could be better to buy a composter, turn upside down, same thing really. I use them, sometimes just so they catch the hay falling from the hay net and to stop the hay net hanging free.
I've had them for years now, and they are still fine, even with them being used for a bit of bum scratching.
Composters are about £20. |

I use a hay bar for Tatoub and he is much better with it than hay nets, I used to have heaps of
Hay all over his bed but not much atall now. |

Not used one as all mine except Taz are fine with haynets. Taz (Mr BV, short for Bleedin Vandal) trashes his haynets. I thought about one but I think he would kick it to pieces as he trashes the stable walls.He is a stallion and kicked through to the stallion next to him and they are firm friends as I eventually stopped bothering to mend the wall completely. Now he has a "talk" hole in the wall he is fine and they sniff noses and talk to each other through the gap (can't get their heads through) but does kick the back wall out.

I got rid of mine. All the hay on the floor and then just trashed. Went back to haynets and never have problems. |

Thank you for all your replies. Decision made from my end now then we are going to invest in a hay bar. However I think I might try to find a second hand one for sale first and see how we get on. Thanks again everyone. All I need to do now is try to work out how to hip load pics #128512; |

Same here, hay on the floor get pees and poos, my friend made hay corners out of ply and battons across the corner,worked for her and a lot cheaper 2 battons each side of corner, with 18mm ply, slip in between the battons, sucuring the ply! Hope that makes sence. |

My youngster got his leg in a big holed hay net, not nice. Oddly if I put hay on the floor he wees and poos on it but if he empties his hay from his bar to the floor himself he doesn't! Work that out. |

I use hay bars for my horses. My 8yr old has grown up with them since she was 8 month old. I did use to feed hay from the floor but found she use to just pee and poo on her hay. Using the hay bars seems to contain more of the hay. All my horses are use to them now and have no problems with them what so ever.
I have recently learned my lesson from using big holed hay nets and will never use them again. Not sure if any of you have seen what happened to my mare Leisha? I put pics up on Facebook after my beautiful sweet mare got stuck in one, I am not sure if she was in it overnight!! She was in a right mess and exhausted when I found her in the morning. She is on the mend now though thanks god.

Only second hand experience. One boy was prone to pawing his haynet so hay bar was safer, he just emptied his into the floor to eat and walked the rest into his bed. I can see why they are more natural however what's wrong with feeding of the floor.
I am in thinking it's the small hole nets that must surely cause teeth and neck issues. My boy has 2 large hole nets and some on the floor every night in winter. |

 I have two hay bars. My older boy loves his and eats from the top and leaves it all in the bar. My youngster completely empties his onto the floor and then looks like a thatched cottage. My dentist thinks they are fantastic for keeping teeth aligned and neck muscles relaxed. |
