Just to let you know The Ancient One has metamorphosed into The Strutting, Snorting One without a lot of brakes, either!
Extraordinary: the withdrawn, frail, sharks-fin withered, sunken eyed, concave necked, shuffling gaited ancient, quiet old hack is now a SSO! Brilliant glittering deep chestnut coat, long wavy caramel mane (scissored short one now grown out) neck muscling up, withers filling out, eyes gleaming and has discovered . . . extended trot! Wheee! He is only allowed to do it occasionally and only on one long side or across the diagonal, but he seems intoxicated by the experience, and it's snort, flash, tail over back every time and then bounce and flounce for the rest of the session!
He is very "onward bound" when out, manageable, but just wants to go faster -everywhere! Oh dear, he was meant to be an quiet, old lady's hack.
TTSSO's manners are very good, now stands to be mounted and waits while girths ect checked, good at gate opening/closing, waiting for traffic, so no worries there. He's just so darned fast and both the YM and I, used to TB ex-racers, fit Arabians, ditto Irish hunters, Cleveland Bays and other types of determined sorts, are having trouble going up the gallops as he inches out of that nice hand canter . . .to . . . just a leetle bit faster. And before you can think - he's upped the pace in a heart beat and is galloping like, well, the fastest horse I have ever ridden, which was an ex flat racer, at the top end of 17hh, and just out of training. "Just take her round the bottom field for a leg-stretch, dear" well, I was only 12 and thrilled when my aid for trot resulted in instant canter and then flat out gallop! Fortunately, it was a very big field with a very big hedge at the end of it.
Anyway, TSSO, is being a bit of a handful, but I expect it will all settle down eventually. And he does seem to be enjoying life.

Hmmm. . . stopping . . Well, that is the problem. We can, but is not the elegant, gathering and steadying that I have eventually managed to achieved on the other flying fiends. More a bounce, leap and slide. PK's previous owner ' couldn't remember' when his teeth had last been looked at - "might have been last year - maybe?". The EDT is coming out for both PK and S this week, so his efforts may make improve the brakes. PK found another way to amuse himself yesterday, tongue over bit. He's really good at it, under and over, jogging cheerfully along, ears well forward, winding the muscled, gleaming neck in and out. I can just feel him going "check me out, folks, how good is this one". Currently in a Pelham with double reins. Squeeze bradoon, some brakes but not enough to produce the back end under and slowing. More the back end going out the back, no slower, and then, with a squeeze on the curb, the neck goes up - and up, nose up then back end slows down. All very quick. Sitting and shutting forward motion with seat and legs at the same time as rein aids. The power in back and front end results in 'orrible 'ollowing in the middle and the bounce, leap and slide, head tossing, neck snaking, snorting monster. Dreadful creature.
The first canter is ok, re a gathered steady downward transition. All the others get steadily more ragged.
More schooling. It is only seven weeks since TAO arrived. Patience. I'll see what the EDT says and does. He is looking good, though. Wheee!

Go on admit it - you're loving it! Nothing better than a blow out on a very fast Arab to make you grin with glee (and take you back to being a 12 year old)!! Sounds fantastic , as long as you can stop safely of course (you didn't mention that bit)

It's probably because he is now being fed properly and is feeling all the better for it

Yippee Zooscat, always knew there was something hiding behind the sad eyes. You seem to have a chestnut version of my 19 year old Jamil. All I can advise is a hip flask and a Neue Schule Universal bit when you have both taken flight and praying no longer works! Oh and btw I am still waiting for the silly old s*d to calm down. Enjoy

Brilliant up-date, fantastic to read.
