I have a gelding who isn't keen on bits so I have been using a little s hackamore on him. I would ideally like to find a bit that he likes as he would do a fab low level dressage test. However it's not the end of the world to me if that doesn't happen.
I have tried a Myler comfort snaffle, stainless lozenge snaffle, sweet iron with copper lozenge snaffle and a stainless french link snaffle. He disliked the sweet iron the least and I would like to try a mullen mouth snaffle, but can't find a sweet iron version. Any other suggestions? |

Unfortunately Stubben golden wing bits are not dressage legal. The wings are classed as guards and guards are not allowed. A shame as its a great bit. |

We have also had problems with a happy mouth rubbing the sensitive mouth of one of ours - just a warning. Definitely use a bit bank, they can advise you and you will save a fortune in trial and error purchases. The gelding (above) has been through a number of types, I'm not sure what the current one is but it has golden 'wings' to guard his hyper sensitive mouth from rubbing.
Edited to add it's a stubben golden wings snaffle with a sweet copper mouth and a lozenge.

It's not dressage legal but I use a Cambridge snaffle on one of my Arabs who was very fussy with most jointed bits,but I have found now his happy in that I have gone back to a lozenge snaffle and he tolerates it, I think sometimes once they get there confidence with one bit they accept others more easily, I also show him in a myler Pelham which he goes lovely in.
I did try him in a happy mouth and it rubbed his mouth until it bled he is a very sensitive soul so may have just been him, but not nice all the same. |

I have a fusspot but his issue isnt really his mouth or the bit. Its a case of not wanting to work from behind into a connection so it shows with the fussy mouth. He is worse with some bits over others but it also depends on if hes in a lazy mood or not. He is getting better with time though. I have to really ride him forward and keep my hands absolutely still. If I set my wrist (a habit I have, then I get an argument back).
Anyway, Ive been using a sprenger sensogan eggbutt with lozenge. He prefers the stability of the fixed ring as he doesnt like too much movement in his mouth. Even eggbutt sweet irons with french link is preferable to loose rings according to him.
I am trialling a micklem just now. I still get the 'nooo, I dont want to use my bum' mouthiness but when he does settle and start moving properly he is so lovely and soft. Im quite liking what Im getting with it so far.
Another friend who had a fussy mouthed horse totally changed with the micklem.
Im not overly keen on NS bits. For some reason none seem to sit properly in the mouth. They always end up more to one side, even if your walking along on a loose contact. |

Urgh... saddles and saddle fitters. :( It took me three saddle fitters to find one that didn't try to insist that my blatantly wide, table top mare needed a medium tree.

I have always had great success with Neue Schule especially the Team up and Universal Trans. Having said that my 6 year old seems to go well in a bit then after a while starts to resent the bit I am using at the time. I keep changing from bit to bit so was thinking of trying bitless and after doing some research I think it is another avenue with so much choice, it may prove expensive! 
I found the Happy Mouth bits to be quite bulky in my boys mouth.
I don't know saddles and bits what a headache, we could try without any!   |

I'll have a look at happy mouth. :) I might end up hiring a few to try, it soon adds up when you end up buying a few that are rejected. |

I also like Neue Schule bits and find all my others go well in them plus you can hire them first. |

I have tried all sorts on my new PBA girl and i have found that she is happier for now bitless, i have put her in a Dr Cooks . I am still hoping once we get her going i can put her back into a bit . I found she went best in a loose ring Myler with lozenge and what looks like a sweet iron metal and copper inlay in the mouthpiece . Have you tried Happy Mouth bits as that was her other bit of choice in a straight bar. I wish you luck as its not easy is it trying to find the right one |
