my pally mare had a lovely filly by Master Blaster on the 17th June.. I was really shocked as she was not due till the first week of july.... well I got really worried because i noticed she had the odd drip of milk run out of her nose after feeding... I immediately thought ... oh my god .. cleft palette ....Phoned vet and spoke to the main man... equestrian vet for over 40 yrs.... he said "was she early" I said yes 3 weeks ... now bear in mind this is only the 3rd normal sized horse i have bred in 30 yrs.. the others were minis.... he said it was very unlikely that it was cleft palette and it was just due to her throat development being immature and by the time she gets to her due date she will hopefully be fine... she is not breathing in the milk and her chest and breathing is fine. After he said about the early foal thing... i thought i would actually count the days gestation as before 320 days is premature. I know the exact covering dates and they were first cover 2nd August, last cover 6th August. Was scanned in foal on 19th August, vet saying approx 10day fetus. Now I have worked out the gestation for this filly was a maximum of 318 days and a minimum of 314 days so is actually premature, She is not down on her fetlocks and is galloping about bucking and cheeky and friendly, confident etc... she does however have virtually no mane and a very short fine silky coat. She is very alert and feeding well and mum is supplying gallons of milk. Have any of you experienced similar. Cheers. |

Glo I don't know if you have discussed this with your vet but early udder development can be a sign of placentitis, which can be fatal for foals if left untreated. It may not be this but I would certainly talk to your vet about it as the mare will need antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and possibly Altrenogest in order to give baby the best possible chance. I've had one with placentitis, luckily spotted & treated early and baby was fine. Good luck |

I will have a go at pics but I still find it a tad long winded on here... prob because I'm a bit rubbish and am probably doing it wrong. I can manage on Facebook ok but thats my limit. x

Ahh bless baby and congratulations
Millie was 2 weeks early which scared the pants out of me.. she was so dinky but strong and opinionated right from day 1! I do hope everything will be fine with your filly..are there pics in arrivals?....just off to look |

I almost hesitate to write this in case i tempt fate or something ... but i have not observed any milk dribbles from nostrils today... that does not mean there wasn't any... but that's what im hoping... filly seems 100% in all ways. Thanks for your reassuring replies. She is a confident friendly thing.. id be gutted if I lost her... I have been trying to distance myself a bit in case it was worst case scenario and a cleft palete. I am relaxing a bit now. I have seen her do the rather revolting new foal thing of tucking into some of mums very fresh poo..... and then galloping up to me to have a mutual groom session..... I headed off in the opposite direction ... her muzzle was covered in green plop.... yuck. |

One of my mares always foals 2 weeks early, I have had 3 foals from her and her last owner had 2. Her last foal for me was 4 weeks early, a big surprise, but the foal didn't appear premature in any way and was a normal size foal so I assume she was only 2 weeks early for my mare. She is 21 this year so no more foals; her last one is eight now.
If your foal is happy and healthy just keep a careful eye on her as she sounds fine. I had a foal many years ago who wouldn't eat hay or feed. Whatever I tried her with she reacted like you were trying to poison her unlike my other foals who have been trying mum's rations at only days old.
When it got to the end of October and she was nearly 6 months old the vet came to do jabs and I asked him if he would check her. He asked me why as she seemed fine and when I told him she wouldn't eat his reply was "She seems perfectly healthy to me, mum is obviously doing her well. I can examine her, do bloods etc. and give you a big bill but she doesn't need it, she will eat when she is hungry. A couple of weeks later it turned really cold and she started tucking into mum's feed. We do like to worry but when things seem right they usually are! |

I have a mare dew to foal in August, well she started bagging up about 10 weeks before dew date so I have read everything I could find on early foals, I found one article where a lady had a foal that was 303 days and it lived, said that the hocks aren't developed and they had to reduce turnout ( no turnout) till the dew date. Yes we had a 10 month foal. No doubt about dates as we used one stallion and found he was only 7% fertile so when the mare came back in we sent her off to another stallion. We had to parentage test the colt and there was no doubt he was by the second stallion and definitely 10 months. He was a lovely foal but born with a dark bay coat instead of the usual brownish colour you associate with bays. No trouble with any immaturity. He was a second foal and the first was full term and a filly. Oddly enough the stallion who was not the father was a 13 month foal. Again no doubt as mare only covered once. By pure chance he was foaled on 19th June 1979 it would have been his birthday yesterday. |
