Our swallows arrived back in South Yorkshire this morning. They swooped in the barn over my head as I returned from my ride about 9 am. Brilliant

We don't have squirrels around here, we do have cats, but have no dead bodys! Do you think they've gone back!
sab2 Posted - 14 Jul 2015 : 9:35:27 PM
Do you have any Squirrels , i chased the Squirrel off the bird feeders the other day , it jumped from the tree halfway up the house wall then ran up under the roof and along jumping on the nests as it went. Luckily the parent birds went mad and chased it away but could of knocked the babies out of the nest. I haven,t dared chase it away again but luckily it sees me now and runs.
glo Posted - 14 Jul 2015 : 07:15:03 AM
We have had 3 baby's flying around our stables for the last few days, strangely all seem to have gone! babys and mum and dad!
FireLight Posted - 01 Jul 2015 : 9:04:05 PM
Yes very sad Ari and as you say there must be a reason, but what? We don't have any cats and they seemed to be safe.
Ari Posted - 01 Jul 2015 : 6:43:55 PM
Firelight, I posted this 30 June last year....

"Got to yard this aft and found 4 baby swallows dead on floor within 6 inch of each other. No evidence of cat damage and they were very high up on barn roof. Could parents have chucked em out of nest as they looked very close to fledging. Mother Nature can be cruel but is their a reason?"

Very strange, must be a reason and I think parents maybe to blame. Very sad

I don't know if I want them to have another brood Sab2, I was so upset, it spoilt my morning ride as they were on my mind. What if they do the same again? I don't know what happened so cruel and sad.
sab2 Posted - 01 Jul 2015 : 1:00:14 PM
Firelight that awful poor little things but its early so still time for them to rear another brood . I hate it when i find dead baby birds but to find all 4 is heartbreaking .
Lulu no idea , i know mine don,t always use the same nest twice .
FireLight Posted - 01 Jul 2015 : 12:05:56 PM
Well what a disaster! Got to yard this morning and the nest above my boys door has been emptied, 4 dead chicks on the floor, all fully developed and well fed. So sad.
lulu Posted - 01 Jul 2015 : 10:46:09 AM
Swallows are now building another nest this time on the strip lighting, the old nest seems fine would this be the parents or the youngsters all very confusing.
DianaSC Posted - 26 Jun 2015 : 12:38:23 AM
This is the 4th summer since our stables were built and the builders put up special ledges for swallows to nest. Still no swallows. We put up a wooden birdbox too. Nothing except for the odd wasp who turns up to have a chew. Feeling very unappreciated by the local avian community

When I walk the dogs on my neighbours finca in the early evening, there are often gangs of swifts hunting on the wing. If I stand still, they fly so close that I can feel the whoosh of air on my face as they dart by just inches away. Magical. Occasionally there are a few swallows hunting with them but I haven't seen any this year.
lulu Posted - 25 Jun 2015 : 7:03:56 PM
No problems with the swallows four eggs and 4 healthy youngsters b ut unfortunately we lost the wrens nest and all her little ones.Very sad.
FireLight Posted - 22 Jun 2015 : 3:57:09 PM
Ours too but sadly we have had a few casualties. So sad.
sab2 Posted - 21 Jun 2015 : 4:07:19 PM
Our nests are all starting to hatch so lots of cheeping going on in the stables and in our big shed :)
lulu Posted - 21 Jun 2015 : 10:25:08 AM
First brood of swallows have gone now awaiting the next lot.
Ari Posted - 30 May 2015 : 7:37:29 PM
When my pal did barn convention they had to hold up fitting windows until Swalllows and gone.
glo Posted - 30 May 2015 : 6:40:11 PM
We have just brought a house down the road and there are swallows in the loft or would be if we hadent gutted the place, now they are flying all over, seen to be able to get in and out somewhere.
glo Posted - 11 May 2015 : 10:28:37 PM
The sky was full of them to night! Thought all mine had been got by the cat!
sab2 Posted - 10 May 2015 : 7:17:51 PM
We have had quite a few more come home over the weekend, getting busy out there now nothing nicer than hearing them twittering away in the stables . Downside is horses are getting used for target practice one of them even had bird poo on her legs
FireLight Posted - 09 May 2015 : 5:23:00 PM
Our swallows are in full flow they nearly took my nose off yesterday on fly pass! They seem to have a lot of 'committee' meetings too that get very heated!
Ari Posted - 09 May 2015 : 3:56:05 PM
Swallows are doing well and I have a nest in my stable this year. Ari is out 24/7 apart from when I ride so it's amazing to me how they just carry on with their busy lives when we are in "their" stable.
Really lucky to see Barn Owl several times last week flying out of owl box.
lulu Posted - 07 May 2015 : 6:58:31 PM
Swallows are back and nesting in their usual place in my stable. Wren has laid four tiny eggs in her small but beautiful nest in our covered water tap. We have 10 ducklings on the stream at the bottom of the field.
sab2 Posted - 05 May 2015 : 5:42:35 PM
We still only have 4 Swallows at home and 3 Swallows in our shed, no House Martins yet either :(. House Sparrows are happily feeding their families and the Cuckoo can be heard about 6.30am , also heard a Cuckoo in our big fields which are 3.5 miles from the house. I hope we get more Swallows back as we normally have lots here .
Quarabian Posted - 03 May 2015 : 7:24:32 PM
Our swallows have started coming into the buildings to repair the old nests. It always seems a shame that after nice weather they have to put up with this cold spell. I am remembering to leave puddles to make some mud.
Tomos Posted - 17 Apr 2015 : 10:47:24 PM
Not a swallow to be seen here
Quarabian Posted - 17 Apr 2015 : 9:56:32 PM
