Just wondering if there is anyone on here who has been through the banding process? Just had my 10 month olds hernia banded and we are only on day 3. Just wanted to hear others experience of results achieved and time progress

It's just dying off now. Was warned it's a lengthy process as has to die off then heal over and swelling to subside so will let you know in a few weeks time :)

I had a filly with a hernia, it was about 2 and a bit fingers, as a foal it just looked like loose flesh, as she grew, the skin got tighter, and it didn't have a bulge coming out, we has it looked at by the vet, but didn't do anything. Vet said most heal themselves if nothing is coming out. As yours was bulging you did the right thing, getting rid of the loose skin. 10 months is young to have it done. What is it like now, has the ringed bit fallen off yet!

A friend of mine had there colt banded and stitched at the same time they had it gelded, once healed you would never had known there was one there, the only tell tell was he could pee almost to his front legs, as it had pulled the skin tight in that area!

I had a filly who was born with a small hernia and my vet said to leave it. By the time she was 10 months it had healed itself.

It's 'banded' if 1 finger hole. It works by banding the protruding tissue which is the rest of the cord and fatty tissue then the scar tissue left behind seals the hole in the muscle. I've been through it with my vet as the procedure has been done just wanted to see if there was anyone on here who has been through the process

I think it is done if the hernia is not too large and it keeps the intestines in to give the gap time to grow over. You need to speak to your vet as I assume he/she thinks that it might sort itself out without an operation.

I have never heard of the term 'Banding' but we did have a filly who had an umbilical hernia. She acquired it at birth and was also a Barker foal who was saved by the vets at Langford. The Vets told us they would operate when she was a yearling as she only weighed 22 pounds when she came home from them and needed to build up her strength. The operation was successful and she came home with the instructions she was only allowed to walk for two weeks then she should be OK. Somehow she seemed to know and was an absolute angel. She was Mydomira the mother of Ziadomira so you can see what a good job they did as she had a foal.
