Murphy's case has highlights that chips move and are not reliable if only the animals neck is scanned. His chip had migrated to his rear end and he is only back home because the vet nurse had seen the publicity and was sure it was him so scanned his whole body.

It is well worth getting chips checked whenever a pet visits the vet. Dexter is on his second as the first one couldn't be found and he nearly had a third until vet found it behind is ear.

It's great they are soon to be compulsary but I do hope lessons have been learned and in future the whole body is scanned not just where the chip should be.

Things are looking up. I had my pup spayed at the large practice I have used for horses for 20yrs. They knew me, however they hadn't met Dolly as she was vaccinated and chipped at vet I use for dogs and cats. The first thing they asked was "is she microchipped" then checked it with scanner. Very reassuring as I am sure if they had any doubts they could have easily matched details.

I didn't know either, until I found one by accident when buying dog treats! I took it to dog class last week and had a checking session!

I didn't know one could just buy a scanner - good idea!

Heidi that's a great idea and not that expensive. Thinking of a joint purchase with friends as we all have dogs, cats and horses chipped. Ari horse at 12 isn't done, I will put that right at routine vacs visit in June.

I recently purchased a Halo microchip scanner from Amazon, so I can check Elmo's and friends animals chips regularly.

Also just read on FB - dog picked up by RSPCA, scanned twice due to heavy rain obscuring number; 2 microchips found and dog now reunited with owner after being lost/stolen 4 years ago!

Agreed, I always ask my Vet to check in case one of the cat's chips have moved.

They can break as well, when i had our homebred TB mare chipped as a foal it broke as he was putting it in, the vet had to inform Weatherbys what had happened as chip had gone in but broken . They said that they would make a note of it and when scanned if it ever didn,t show up we would know it had stopped working. I have all my gang chipped and am so pleased to hear that its going to be compulsary in dogs now as well as horses.
