Posted - 22 Apr 2014 : 1:21:58 PM I can't say its our first BE as we did half of one last year (eliminated at the water....) but on Saturday we went to our first BE of the year at Dalkeith Country Estate near Edinburgh, doing the 80(T) class. Its a brand new venue and there have been teething problems with the XC course sadly, so it was all run around one field, but still a testing up to height course. Dressage was in front of the big country house - stunning! - and SJ was in the main arena surrounded by trade stands, with the smallest warm up arena in the world.
It was hot - no one has told Gus he is from the desert and he doesnt 'do' heat! However he was ACE all day, so easy compared to the horror he was as a youngster! He did what we thought was a beautiful dressage test but the judge disagreed - however we got a 37.5 (62.5%) so not too appalling. He then jumped a super clear SJ XC started off a bit green and 'argh' but he had got into his stride by fence 3. He flew everything else easily and came home clear, sadly one second over the optimum time to get 0.4 time penalties but i was totally delighted with it anyway - that was our first proper, competitive XC round so i had no idea how the timing would work out.
We ended up 7th! Out of 30! What a star he is. Someone on the XC said "that has quite a lot of Arab in it" - i did actually put in our commentary notes that he is pure bred ;-) We're off to do the 90 class at Burgie this weekend which is slightly more 'home ground' for us, really looking forward to it.
Ready for photo overload?!

Brooke, he's 15.2 so looked tiny beside most of the big strapping horses there!
Boultons he's by Master Design GA, out of a mare called Azaq Johar who was by Gonorar.
I fear we're not going to get quite such glorious weather this weekend.... |
