As of yesterday Eba has become really stroppy. She is usually such a sweetie, but when the lady came to trim her feet the first thing she did was bite her and then was bargy all session.
I wasn't too concerned but when I went to get her in from the field today she was behaving quite oddly. As she came to me, she walked in really curving loops and then kept stopping and turning side on. When she finally got to me she seemed ok, but as I stroked her over, and got to her lower abdomen she really didn't like it and seemed very sensitive, there and on her flank on both sides.
I checked her over and can't see anything external, although she had a bit of a clear gel like discharge from her vulva.
The YO reckons it is just a season, but she is four and has had seasons before and I have never noticed her be stroppy or sore before. Do seasons change in terms of severity?
When she was being stroppy yesterday, I kept sending her back a bit, could she have tweaked something? Otherwise, could she have an infection?
Any thoughts?

I think the weather is playing a huge part this year. I don't normally notice my mare's seasons as her mood doesn't change that dramatically but have to say that, with her last season, it was really obvious. She was even showing out to my gelding, who she basically tolerates.
My mare wasn't stroppy or anything, just being a complete tart. I have to say that if she was stroppy and showing signs of discomfort then I would get her checked out for peace of mind....

no she is in with other mares. I don't think they wlould have tried anything, although one of the other mares on the yard seems hormonally confused so I wouldn't put it past her, but she is nowhere near us at the mo.

She's not out with a gelding is she? if she is, and she's in season maybe he's been trying to cover her? Would explain the pain in her sides/flanks. I've certainly known geldings in the past cover mares in season!

Phew - sounds like I am being paranoid mum. It is just she has never reacted like that before and I have had her coming up on three years. Previously you knew she was in season as she would call to everything in site and spend the whole time being a complete tart. Today she wasn't at all interested in the boys in the field next door.

easy- she is in season or coming in season.
Are you in the same mood the whole time? no! mares are the same. Know her cycle then you will understand.

Sounds like in season to me but you know you're own horse better than anyone and if this isn't normal behaviour keep an eye on her and maybe get her checked over. |
