Baz has the saddler coming out on Saturday to try fit him for a saddle, i have said i would prefer a leather, but think the Thorowgood will end up being the best at the moment.

Any questions i need to ask? I am going to try get on board but he has not been sat on since September.injurys and all

What saddle did you end up with? My fitter has recommended several, but it's getting hold of them 2nd hand. I'm in Glos in the Forest of Dean.

Hi Angel
Glad you finally sorted out Baz's saddle!
You'll have to give me the lady's details always useful to have a contact for someone good like that

Any suggestions for a good saddle. Just bought a new horse, complete with tack. Unfortunately saddle is too small. It's med-wide & he's now nearly Xwide. Big shoulders & flat back. Oh the joy's of Arab ownership!

woohoo - no stopping you now!

Your lucky, i went through two saddlers and every second hand saddle they had and nothing fitted...!

I ended up buying a new saddle (ex shop display so got £200 off) but it still cost me £725.

I've had it for 6 months and am just about to book in for a 6 month check. Ozzy has changed shape so much in the last 6 months i'm dreading it in case the saddler tells me it doesn't fit anymore .....

Well i have just payed deposit on a brown leather VSD KES saddle, the saddle fitter was ace, she has only just set up and understood my brief perfectly she brought about 10 saddles 6 of which were on the good list, the thorowgood although lovely the leather was better for him. so just parted with £280.00 which i don't think is too bad

I would definitely buy a cheaper one for now as they can really change shape. I was also told to use a gel pad or prolite pad as Arabi hardly had any back muscle and it just gave him some protection,When I first started backing him, I only had a really old synthetic, not very comfy, luckily my friend said she had a few old saddles I could try so I got the saddle fitter to try them luckily one of hers fitted him fine with a bit of flocking it was a lovely Dressage saddle, so I used that for about a year then decided to buy a new one. His new one fits lovely, I am so glad I waited as when the new one was fitted they said that the one I was using was now too narrow, I think you will be surprised how broad he will get. Good luck

I'm in the same position and will be having the saddler out next month to fit Darcy with her first saddle. I'm hoping a wintec will be ok as I don't get on with Thoro's at all. I'm very excited!!
alethea Posted - 18 Mar 2010 : 10:15:12 AM
He will change shape alot once he is being ridden so for a first saddle a synthetic is always a good call. Get one that allows room for him to broaden out. Better to get something you can pad out to start with rather than getting something that in a couple of months is too narrow and pinches!
Best of luck with the backing

Had made to fit saddle for my boy... no good for me as i paid for saddle to be made for my cob gelding, perfect at first then doesn't fit him properly as he changed shape waste £600!!! so i'm using barefoot treeless saddle which fits ANY type of horses and so comfy to ride in for long distances
BeckyBoodle Posted - 18 Mar 2010 : 09:08:05 AM
If he hasn't been ridden for a while, I would check how they will fit to allow for muscle build up and also to allow for shape change seeing as we are just coming out of winter. My friend's quarter horse was fitted this time last year which hadn't been ridden for a while and by late spring the saddle was far too small. Bespoke leather, so quite a problem.

Hope that helps.
