“Great
Britain had something to cheer about in the two-year-old colt
class when Patros HB (Psytadel x Padisha Ibn Estopa) raised
the roof with his spell-binding trot, scoring four 20s and a
19.5 for movement. A popular colt, this striking chestnut is
owned by Linda Hughes and Dominic Carden and he received the
highest marks of all the colts with a final score of 91.6…” ( The
Arabian Magazine, December 2006" )
In a very short space of time, Patros HB has developed a very
large and rapidly growing fan club. At just three years old,
this striking chestnut colt he has already proved his great lineage,
taking a number of significant wins both at home in the UK and
in Europe. Now getting ready for the 2007 breeding and showing
season, Patros HB is sure to grow into a stallion who will be
remembered for years to come.
Linda and Dominic of Cotswold Arabians, Gloucester, discovered
Patros when he was just 10 months old. “We were visiting
the Murana Stud in Germany and while there, we saw this furry
ball of fluff who pranced around the indoor school,” explains
Linda. “Even at that age, he showed the same great movement
which he regularly displays in the show-ring with his tail raised
like a flag and with his big, huge strides.

“ It
was immediately obvious to Dominic and I that Patros was a
friendly chap who loved attention and so we bought him for
no
other reason than he was entertaining. And he has certainly
made us smile!
With
Patros’ pedigree, made up of Egyptian, Crabbet and
Russian lines, it is little wonder that he has been so
successful and also has that ability to make people smile.
His sire, Psytadel, is one of the most famous sons of the
legendary Padrons Psyche and has become a super sire in
Europe. Through him, Patros can boast the Reserve Junior
Male World Champion El Amin and the British National Champion
Final Shadow among his half-brothers. On the dam side Patros
goes back to the legendary mare Estopa through his dam
Padisha Ibn Estopa, a line which is highly sought-after.
Having made the decision to purchase Patros, Linda and Dominic eagerly awaited
his arrival at Cotswold Arabians and despite arriving in the cold and the snow,
Patros showed the zest and great attitude for which is he so well known, bouncing
happily around his new home.
“ Patros was quite skinny when he arrived and despite being too thin, we
took him to the North West Group C Show as a yearling, where he wowed the crowd
with his movement, qualifying for Europe his first time out,” says Linda. “After
several more shows, Patros went to the UK International at Towerlands where he
gained four 19s for movement and qualified for Paris; something we were pleasantly
surprised about!” |

With interest in this young colt growing, Patros again graced
the show-ring in 2006 as a two year old and won several shows
including the HoCoN C Show, the Midland Arabian Festival
(which also has C status) and the Classic C Show, where he
also took
the Junior Male Championship under the expertise of handler
Andrew Tonge. Another visit to Towerlands saw Patros miss out
on the
top spot by 0.2 points, but again earning many fans as he
commanded the ring, gaining three 20s and two 19.5s for movement
in the
process.
With such a spectacular season behind them, Linda and Dominic
decided that the natural next step was for Patros to go
to the 2006 European Championships. “We thought he might stand
half a chance at the show and so he went to Moorsele, gained
the highest colt marks of the show, improved his Towerlands movement
marks scoring four 20s and a 19.5 and secured the top spot in
his class,” said Linda. “We were surprised but delighted
and although we were disappointed that he didn’t
make the Top Five, the marks he was awarded at the show
speak for
themselves.”
While Patros has enjoyed a successful time in the show-ring – and
there is a lot more to come yet from this super colt – it
is his personality which Linda and Dominic love so much;
the wins are secondary.
“
At home, Patros is very laidback and he has a superb attitude
and temperament,” said Linda. “He is able to
turn on the charm at exactly the right moment, but he is
also gentle
enough to play with the other colts and he lives quietly
in close proximity to our fillies.”

Linda
and Dominic are looking forward to seeing Patros’ first
foal crop, which are due this summer, and he already has
a number of breedings booked for this year.
As well as pure-bred Arabian owners, Linda and Dominic have
been contacted by a number of people from the dressage world
who are keen to use Patros because of his powerful movement
and natural flair.
“ At the end of the day, he is my Patros and I love him to pieces,” smiles
Linda. “The thing that I love about him the most is the way that he looks
at you: whether he is in the school at home, enjoying himself in the show-ring
or just chilling out in the paddocks at home, Patros has this way of looking
at you as if to say ‘hey, concentrate! You need to look at me as I am the
bees’ knees’ – and he is!”
